An Idea Sees the Light of Day

First step from inspiration to idea. Developing the idea and creating a plan.

02

Tying the Fly

When the idea is developed and the plan is made, the practical work begins, to make the fly perfectly suited for its purpose.

03

Testing the Fly by the Stream

Once the fly is tied, it needs to undergo testing by the stream, and naturally, it should outsmart even the most wary and selective fish.

A Bit About Me Behind This Page

Briefly About a Long Life of Fly Tying

Since I caught my first trout in 1976 and tied my first fly in 1981, a lot of water has passed under the bridge.

I am a middle-aged boy from 1967 and remember very clearly how I many years ago learned to catch trout, with my bare hands and with a net, in the streams of my childhood. The wet wellingtons and the rusty worm hooks, from back then, have since been replaced with breathable wading boots and small barbless dry fly hooks.

I’ve always been very passionate about my flytying, and I’ve been so fortunate that my hobby has brought me a lot of great experiences and exciting challenges.

I’ve taken part in flytying copetitions, had the pleasure of teaching in various fishing clubs and associations, tied flies at Fly Fishing and Outdoor shows, written articles for various European fishing magazines, and recently I had the pleasure of writing a chapter for Gordon van der Spuy’s new book: The Feather Mechanic II.

But above all, I’ve had a lot of unforgettable experiences and made friends for life.

My Fly Tying World

A glimpse into processes and fly tying techniques. What is going on at the vise, when thoughts and ideas are being transformed into flies that serve many different purposes.

One of my creations “Luna Mayfly“, I’ve been given the opportunity to present in Gordon van der Spuy’s new book, “The Feather Mechanic II: Beyond the Pattern.” In it, I guide the reader through the tying processes, making it an easy task to tie their own Luna Mayfly. Additionally, the book is beautifully illustrated by Gordon himself.

This is just a brief reflection on what inspired me, what fuels my thoughts, and keeps me going.

More About Me Behind "Hatching Fly"

A Life of Fishing and Flies

It all began a long, long time ago. I was probably around 9 or 10 years old. It’s a bit difficult to remember now, but indeed, much water has passed under the bridge since I caught my first trout in 1976. However, I remember quite vividly the dark green velvet trousers with patches on the knees, the Icelandic hand-knitted sweater, and the leaky wellingtons, always more wet on the inside than on the outside, when I came home from the stream. It was a completely different time back then, where the clothing we fished in was simply old, discarded, and worn-out clothes. A few years later, the bucket hat became fashionable, at least among my fishing buddies, but apart from that, there wasn’t really any fancy fishing clothes or gadgets at that time. Not that we knew of anyway.
